Overview

On the Japanese programme offered by Saint Olaf College you may take Japanese language courses to fulfill the College’s World Languages and Cultures requirement or to major in Japanese or Asian Studies.

Key facts

The course offers four years of language courses. Students not only develop skills in the language, but also gain knowledge of Japan in all of the language courses by using various authentic materials.

The programme offer various Japan-related courses via the Asian Studies department as well as from other departments such as Art & Art History, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Religion.

You can enroll in the Asian Conversations Program to broaden your understanding of Asia while studying Japanese and traveling to Japan for our January Interim.

You can choose from three different campuses to study abroad for a semester or entire year: Waseda University in Tokyo, Nagoya University in Nagoya, or Hokusei Gakuin University in Sapporo.

You can apply for one of our summer Internship in Japan, at Education First (EF), an international education company in their Tokyo office in Shibuya, or at The KIKAI institute for Coral Reef Sciences on the small island of Kikaijima.

You can apply to live in the Japanese Language House.

General requirements

The Common Application or Coalition Application

TOEFL (minimum score 90), Academic IELTS (minimum band 6.5), or Duolingo (minimum score of 120). This requirement will be waived automatically if English is your first language and/or your primary language of instruction.

Optional: SAT or ACT scores. If you submit either of these test scores, we will accept self-reported test scores. Should you choose to enroll at St. Olaf, you will need to provide official test score reports from College Board, ACT, or on your official high school transcript.

One teacher evaluation from an academic subject area.
