The English programme Lycoming College is a tight-knit literary community where students marry their passions for writing and reading with their natural curiosity about the world around them. Intimate class sizes facilitate casual group discussions on literary themes, in-depth analysis of cultural contexts, and collaborative writing workshops with peers.

Here, students become each other’s biggest fans and most careful critics, all while gaining the practical communication, research, and critical thinking skills the real world demands. The carefully crafted curriculum helps students develop creative and critical reading, writing, and thinking skills that prepare them for a multitude of jobs and careers.

Classes are taught by a small group of professionals with the highest degrees in their field and a combined total of more than 40 publications.

Courses emphasize reading and explore a wide variety of genres, from poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction to American, British, Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, Romantic, Victorian, and African American literature.

The degree programs make it easy for students to enhance their career outlook by also pursuing a primary or secondary education certification or by adding another major/minor in complementary programs such as medieval studies, women and gender studies, media writing, and American studies.

Small class sizes guarantee individualized learning, cooperative experiences, and fieldwork such as assistantships, study abroad, internships, and publication.

Careers and opportunities

An English major, combined with the liberal arts and sciences education, prepares you for a variety of careers.

Some of the alumni can be found enrolled in graduate school, pursuing their Master of Fine Arts, while others begin their careers immediately upon graduation.

General requirements

All transcripts and certificates must be official and must be translated into English. If you've attended more than one school, request a separate transcript from each school.

Submit Your Standardized Test Scores (Optional)

Submit Your English Proficiency Exam Scores: Lycoming requires submission of one of the following assessments: TOEFL IBT (minimum score 70); TOEFL PBT (minimum score 525); IELTS (minimum overall band score 6.0); Pearson English Test -PTE Academic (minimum score 50) or Duolingo English Test - DET (minimum score 100), unless you live in an English-speaking country.

Submit Financial Support Documents: International students planning to attend with an F-1 or J-1 visa will be required to submit proof of financial support. Students must complete and return the Financial Disclosure Form and an official bank statement (translated into English, if necessary) verifying adequate available funds prior to being considered for admission.
