Overview
On the Astronomy programme from Lycoming College classes are small enough to give all students an opportunity to receive individualized attention, and allow students (even first-year students) access to scientific equipment in their areas of interest.
Lycoming astronomy majors are trained in the field of planetarium education, which may serve as a basis for state certification as a secondary school teacher of general science. Other astronomy students pursue careers in aerospace, research observatories, and museums, or become analysts, atmospheric physicists, or computer system analysts.
Why Lycoming?
- The new Lynn Science Center boasts brand new, state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, and the Detwiler Planetarium.
- Students have access to a wide inventory of advanced research equipment as early as their first year.
- All astronomy majors will have the chance to conduct independent research under the mentorship of faculty.
- All classes and labs are taught by professionals with the highest degrees in their field and offer low student-to-faculty ratios.
- Lycoming College ranked 27th on Learn.org’s Top 50 Best Physical Science Degrees for its unique program features, including internship opportunities, labs and facilities available for students, and student-faculty research opportunities.
Careers and opportunities
- More than half of all astronomy and physics majors continue their education at graduate schools. Those students who decide to enter the workforce upon graduation find employment relating to their major, ranging from teaching to industrial research and positions in government labs.
