And Purchase believes in choices. Our job is to prepare you for after college. Our computer science/mathematics program will give you a focus, an area of expertise. But it will also liberate you. Broaden your studies, explore your inner geek, and get ready to redefine the cutting edge. It is designed to introduce students to the principal areas of mathematics and computer science, with an emphasis on applications. Students can choose any 5 upper level elective courses based on their preferences. For example, students more interested in programming careers can take Data Structures and Scripting for the Web, while students more interested in mathematics can take courses in Number Theory and Numerical Analysis. However, all students acquire a strong foundation in the traditional areas of both disciplines. This serves to distinguish Purchase graduates from others with narrower backgrounds. Classes typically are small, and computer classes include closed labs (scheduled time to work in a computer lab with faculty present to provide guidance).

Generally, successful freshman applicants have earned a GPA of 3.0 (or 85 on a 100 point scale).Purchase does not require scores from the SAT or ACT exam (with exceptions), though applicants are given the option to submit them. It is recommended that test scores be submitted only if it is believed to benefit the application. For applicants who are considering submitting scores, we typically prefer the following:

SAT: 1170 total score; minimum Reading score of 24
ACT: 24 Composite
