If you can articulate a program of study that can’t be accommodated in another major, the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts (BALA) could be the answer. With the help of two faculty sponsors representing their study disciplines, you can create a curriculum—a highly individualized and innovative major area of study. Only currently matriculated students can apply for a BA in Liberal Arts. Each student works closely with two or more faculty sponsors from different disciplines to design a course of study that meets both the specialized interests of the student and the academic standards of the college. This degree program appeals especially to students interested in constructing highly individualized and innovative major areas of study. Some examples include bioethics, Mediterranean studies, philosophy of science, and choreography of literature. Students may also work with the faculty in established programs currently offering minors, which could provide core coursework that serves as a basis for a major.

Courses include:

Students design a proposed curriculum for the major in collaboration with two or more faculty sponsors. This proposal is reviewed by the BALA committee, which may include faculty representatives from the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of the Arts.

Generally, successful freshman applicants have earned a GPA of 3.0 (or 85 on a 100 point scale).Purchase does not require scores from the SAT or ACT exam (with exceptions), though applicants are given the option to submit them. It is recommended that test scores be submitted only if it is believed to benefit the application. For applicants who are considering submitting scores, we typically prefer the following:
