According to our stated mission, we, the Southern University and A&M College family, have a long and illustrious history of producing distinguished graduates in every academic discipline.

At the forefront, the Department of Chemistry has been very instrumental in fulfilling that mission by establishing and maintaining a rich tradition of producing chemistry majors who have gone on to make contributions in every field of human endeavor. Our graduates have and continue to demonstrate a fundamental tenet of chemists everywhere -chemistry is a science that impacts everyone and everything.

Our tracks

Our majors have the opportunity to choose one of three main tracks:

(1) one that prepares students for industrial or graduate research;

(2) one that prepares students for the health professions or life sciences;

(3) one that allows the students to earn a dual degree in chemistry and chemical engineering.

Green Chemistry Education

The Chemistry Program at Southern University has signed the Green Chemistry Commitment with Beyond Benign, a green chemistry education non-profit, as part of its 25x25 Initiative in partnership with Dow. The goal of the 25x25 Initiative is to ensure that 25 percent of graduating chemists in the US have a background in green chemistry by 2025. Southern University is the third HBCU to sign the commitment and the first and only HBCU in the state of Louisiana.
