Overview

The program includes courses in language, literature, film, art, business, philosophy and more to allow you to develop communicative and intercultural competency in Spanish.

From engaging in study abroad to volunteering at a local Spanish-speaking nonprofit, you will be engaged in opportunities that will help you learn to effectively communicate in Spanish. Practicing your language skills in real-world situations will allow you to expand your bilingual abilities, to learn to think critically and creatively in Spanish and to negotiate meaning between Spanish and English.

Program Learning Outcomes

The Spanish major program from California Polytechnic State University provides students opportunities to:

Learn to communicate effectively in Spanish and other target languages through speaking, listening, reading, and writing in authentic situations.

Develop communicative and intercultural competency so that they can work productively both as individuals and in collaboration with others.

Gain perspective on cultural and historical achievements in the target-language cultures as well as on relevant issues of diversity.

Cultivate awareness of ethical and professional perspectives that reflect linguistic and cultural heritage.

Think critically and creatively using Spanish and other target languages and negotiate meaning between the target language(s) and English.

Develop the life-long ability to evaluate ways in which language and culture provide perspective on the larger world of the arts, sciences, and technology.

Coursework: They look at the college-prep coursework you have taken during high school, including the courses you have in progress or planned during 12th grade

GPA: For the purposes of your application, they'll consider your 9th-11th grade weighted GPA
Extracurricular Activities and Work Experience: Cal Poly takes activities such as work experience, internships, volunteer programs and extracurricular activities into consideration
