Overview

The Social Studies - Secondary Education program from West Virginia University provides a unique opportunity to engage in the diverse histories of the world, support social and cultural understanding and promote civic competence and engagement.In addition, it guides you in pedagogy through advanced classes in both content areas of social studies and professional education classes with many hours in local schools, observing, tutoring and student teaching. As a result of carefully sequenced and assessed learning opportunities, you are exposed to the different methodologies of a variety of disciplines within social studies education and develop complex research and communication skills.In four years, you’ll not only have completed the requirements for graduation, but also for teacher certification in West Virginia. Graduates with a social studies major are prepared to make an impact teaching in secondary classrooms, other educational settings or their chosen career path.

The learning goals for the WVU Secondary Teacher Education Program are to prepare students who:

Have commitment and skills to engage in life-long learning;

Recognize that teaching is a professional, moral, and ethical enterprise with well-developed ethical frameworks which facilitate effective teaching;

Will serve as a facilitator of learning for all students;

Possess in-depth knowledge of both pedagogy and content, and the relationships between them;

Value and integrate knowledge from a wide variety of fields, are creative and open to new ideas, and are able to act constructively in a world characterized by technological, cultural, and societal diversity and change.

Must have at least a 2.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale for general admission.

Must meet English Proficiency or request conditional admission and admission to the Intensive English Program (IEP).
Please be advised that some Engineering majors may reach capacity and therefore will be restricted from entry.
For direct admission to some colleges and majors, SAT or ACT scores are required and must be sent to WVU directly from the respective testing services. Please review the program requirements. For all other majors, international students are encouraged but not required to submit SAT or ACT scores, if available. SAT/ACT scores are useful for determining scholarship eligibility.
WVU welcomes applications from students with IGCSE and O-Level Certificates from Cambridge International for admissions consideration.
