With a long history of both teacher education and a vibrant music program, EIU has earned recognition for preparing outstanding music teachers.

Students of the Music Education program at Eastern Illinois University gain immediate experience through observing and teaching in music classrooms during each semester of enrollment and all concentrations lead to the same certification, with broad-based preparation in all areas of music education.

However, each of the following concentrations has unique professional development experiences, designed to help the prospective teacher achieve his/her professional and musical goals.

In all concentrations, students study their primary instrument or voice during weekly, hour-long private lessons and complete a junior and senior recital.

The Eastern Illinois University Department of Music is housed in the Doudna Fine Arts Center. This world-class, state-of-the-art performance and teaching complex houses the Departments of Music, Art and Theatre Arts. Designed by internationally renowned architect Antoine Predock, the center is the region's newest architectural landmark.

The Doudna Fine Arts Center also offers a full array of arts events. Programming includes the New and Emerging Artists Series, other series and performances, lectures, exhibitions, and related events.

General requirements

Official records (transcripts or mark sheets) beginning with secondary school. A minimum grade point average of a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required. All transcripts become property of this University.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

A completed International Student Financial Affidavit Form and a bank statement (submitted online via MyEIU account), documenting sufficient funding for the intended program of study.

A passport copy is required.

Non-refundable application fee of $30.00 U.S. in the form of a check, certified check or money order made payable to Eastern Illinois University, application fee is valid for one year.
