Overview
Based in the heart of UCL's Bloomsbury campus and the Royal Free Hospital in London, this cutting-edge, evidence-based Nutrition and Medical Sciences BSc (Hons) at UCL is an unrivalled foundation for future practising nutritionists.
Good nutrition is the basis of a healthy life and the avoidance of illness. Study our Nutrition and Medical Sciences BSc to learn how nutrition relates to personal diet, lifestyle, and modern patterns of disease.
You'll explore the foundations of human biology and medicine, including the major body systems in health and disease, while also delving in depth into the themes of human growth and development.
The course covers therapeutic approaches to obesity and other disease conditions including frailty and ageing, and nutrition for athletes. You will consider public health nutrition in settings of developing and developed countries as well, looking at both socio-cultural and behavioural aspects.
The foundation of your career
Graduates of this course typically use this degree as a foundation for further study in master's and doctorate programmes. According to the HESA Graduate Outcomes surveys for the 2018-2022 cohorts, over half of the Nutrition and Medical Science respondents (53%) went on to postgraduate study. Several go on to study clinical dietetics at UCL and elsewhere, to become practising dietitians. Others go on to study for PhDs in areas such as nutritional epidemiology.
Graduates who go into the workplace find employment in the food and pharmaceutical industries, and with specialist nutritional organisations. Employers have included the Schoen Clinic, which specialises in mental health and eating disorders, Fertility Dietitian UK, Abbott Diabetes Care, and the Nous Group, an international management consultancy with specialists in health and social care.
