Overview

The Physics and Philosophy programme at Brown University allows students to grapple with computational problems and deepen their investigation of conceptual and epistemological issues. By the end of the program, concentrators possess an excellent conceptual understanding of the most philosophically interesting physics, relativity and quantum mechanics.

Student Goals:

Attain an understanding of philosophical areas of physics, including relativity and quantum mechanics
Grasp the nature of physics, the distinction between physics and philosophy, and the character of physical law
Understand the philosophical fields of epistemology and metaphysics
Research and write a thesis relating to the philosophical aspects of the physical world

We strongly encourage applicants to submit a scanned image of the transcript at the time of application, which can speed processing; however, a final, official transcript will be required of all admitted students who matriculate. Applicants who have attended international institutions must submit transcripts or certified attestations of study, with certified English translations.

Three letters of recommendation by persons well qualified to speak from first-hand knowledge about the applicant's potential for graduate study. All letters should comment on an applicant’s ability to do research and perform in the program’s required coursework.
