Overview

The Composition program from DePaul University combines traditional music studies with instruction in analysis, orchestration, compositional procedures and contemporary musical styles. Music professors are active composers who will give you private composition instruction.

Key Facts

As a Composition major at DePaul University, you’ll take part in seminars with guest composers, write and produce original works and have your compositions performed during the DePaul Composers Forum. You may also submit your pieces to be read and performed by the DePaul Student New Music Ensemble, DePaul Wind Ensemble, DePaul choral groups, DePaul Chamber Orchestra and DePaul Symphony Orchestra.

Living in Chicago, you’ll be able to hear live, professional contemporary music performances, such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. You’ll also be able to attend concerts of every genre, including popular music festivals like Lollapalooza and Pitchfork.

All applicants are required to submit official high school transcripts.

The following curricular requirements are strongly recommended:

Four years of English

Three years of mathematics (minimum course work equivalent to Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II)

Three years of science (two of which must be lab science)

Two years of social science

Two years of language study other than English

Common Application School Report.

Submission of SAT or ACT Scores is not required for admission if you are applying from outside the United States.
