Your undergraduate years are a time for creative and intellectual exploration. The Music Department offers many pathways through academic and performance courses that connect to your interests, whether you consider yourself a skilled musician or not. In fact, you can participate in all of our programs whether or not you major or minor in Music.

The Music (Performance) program cultivates an environment that:

Complements studio lessons with academic courses that focus on the repertory you are learning

Transcripts

Duke will consider official scores as well as scores that are self-reported on the application. Submitting essay scores from the ACT and/or SAT is optional.

Duke requires three letters of recommendation for each applicant: one from your school counselor and two from teachers who have taught you in major academic courses.

A minimum of two selections representing contrasting styles or periods

Recordings uploaded through Slideroom(link opens in a new window/tab) should total 7-15 minutes

Each selection must be an unedited solo performance (accompaniment is optional except with singing) or composition. Composers should submit a score of their work in addition to an uploaded recording.

Please do not send choral, orchestral or ensemble performances unless you were featured as a soloist at some point during the performance. Please trim your recording to the appropriate solo section or specify the exact time with your submission.
