The Department of Art and Art History is dedicated to educating students in the many forms of visual expression. The department believes that becoming visually literate is a fundamental component of a liberal arts education on par with written and verbal learning. The study of art and art history in a liberal arts context encourages students to recognize that visual, written, and verbal forms of communication are often inextricably bound.

In its studio courses, the department endeavors to support the individual, expressive, and technical needs of students as they explore various media and seek to reconcile ideas with their final visualization. In its art history courses, the department seeks to provide students with an overall grounding in the history and theory of world art and visual culture.
A degree in Art or Art History from Rockford University is excellent preparation to be an artist or teacher, or to enter professions in museum and gallery fields. Studio Art from Rockford University also provides students continuing on to graduate school with an outstanding foundation to pursue advanced degrees in fine art, commercial art training, art history, arts administration or various forms of museum studies.
Programme Structure
- The B.A. in Studio Art requires 39 credit hours, including 27 credits in core courses like Beginning Drawing, Basic Design (2-D), Basic Design (3-D), Intermediate Drawing, Studio Art electives, and Senior Seminar and 12 credits of required supporting courses in Art History.
- The B.F.A. in Studio Art requires 60 credit hours, including 27 credits in core courses like Beginning Drawing, Basic Design (2-D), Basic Design (3-D), Intermediate Drawing, Studio Art electives, and Senior Seminar and 12 credits or required supporting courses in Art History, in addition to 15 credits in one of three concentrations: 2-Dimensional Art, 3-Dimensional Art, or Graphic Design.

Funding
The merit scholarships are designed to reward those students who have been academically dedicated and engaged in their educational experience experience. These scholarships are awarded each year to new, undergraduate first-year and transfer international students who attend full-time. All GPA equivalencies are calculated on a 4.0 scale. Scholarships are determined at admission, and there is no separate application process. Scholarships are renewable each year as long as a student is enrolled full-time and maintains a 2.0 grade point average.
