Observe. Reflect. Respond. Create. These are the tasks of the writer, tasks that require attention and skill -- and a great deal of practice -- to accomplish, but that also result in new ways of seeing, understanding and imagining our world. As Flannery O’Connor notes, the writer committed to making good art reflects and glorifies the God from whom all creativity flows. This is what majors strive for in the Creative Writing program of Oklahoma Baptist University.

What makes an OBU Creative Writing degree special?

OBU’s Creative Writing major and minor offers the opportunity to study with publishing writers, learning the crafts of poetry and fiction writing from writer-scholars who are both fully engaged with contemporary trends and well-versed in the traditions of English and American literature.

At OBU, students will develop their craft in a distinctive Christian liberal arts context. The liberal arts foundation of OBU’s core curriculum gives our students a broad, well-rounded base from which to pursue their writing interests. In addition to creative writing workshops in fiction and poetry, literature courses and optional courses in professional editing and other writing-related fields, students may earn degree credit for internships with magazines, publishers, businesses or non-profits. Recent OBU students have held internships with Oklahoma Today, Oklahoma Sports & Fitness, Mongrel Empire Press and other employers. OBU students will also have the opportunity to hear from and talk with contemporary writers on-campus during the Visiting Writers Seminars.

What are OBU grads doing with their Creative Writing degrees?

Recent OBU grads have been accepted to the prestigious Sewanee Writers’ Conference and gone on to graduate programs in Creative Writing at Ohio State University, Emerson College, George Mason University, University of Central Oklahoma, Texas Tech University and the College of Charleston. Others have pursued careers in the non-profit sector and earned admission to Duke Divinity School and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. The Creative Writing major also equips students for careers in freelance writing, editing, publishing and teaching.
