The major and minor in Communication Arts at Washington and Jefferson College expose students to the best ideas and most useful skills from a range of communication-related fields. 


This area of study emphasizes ten essential skills that are transferable to any career: oral communication, reading, critical thinking, inquiry and analysis, teamwork, written communication, problem solving, creative thinking, ethical reasoning, and information literacy. 

The major can be general or emphasized with one of four areas of specialization: Film Studies, Public Relations, Theatre, or Rhetoric.

Seniors majoring in Communication Arts at Washington and Jefferson College will complete a capstone, an independent project that provides an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in their overall educational experience. Past projects include instructional videos, acting in plays, directing plays, documentary films, stage managing, radio programs, dramatic writing, podcasts, public service announcement campaigns, creating and performing solo shows, photography exhibits, graphic design projects, and peer-education workshops.

    • SAT or ACT Scores: Submission of these tests is optional.
    • Certification of Finances: Please have your parents complete this Certification of Finances (PDF) and/or submit supporting documentation.
