Curriculum for the Music major from Saint Mary's College of Maryland consists of three parts: Music theory, Private instruction, history/literature, and Ensemble/individual performance opportunities. Fields of study include: Piano, Guitar, Harp, Saxophone, Conducting, Voice, Composition,Theory, or any combination of these on any major orchestral instrument!

The St. Mary’s Music department works within the context of an innovative and flexible liberal arts study program. We call this the CORE, and it covers a wide range of material, including courses that focus on writing, the arts, math, science, and the social sciences. All students at St. Mary’s (unless non-English native speakers) study a foreign language. The CORE program, together with our music-specific course of study, prepares the student for a wide variety of future careers, and within any career, provides the kind of wide-ranging and cross-disciplinary knowledge that can contribute to success.

The major offers the following:

  • A balance of music theory, history, and literature
  • Private instruction available in all of the major instruments, voice, or composition
  • Numerous ensemble and individual performance opportunities in solo and ensemble concerts
  • Together, these provide a substantial educational foundation, preparing you for advanced training and careers in a variety of fields such as performance, arts administration, music scholarship, and education.
