Overview
As the purest form of quantitative analytical reasoning, Math has applications in nearly every other science. The curriculum offers students the flexibility to follow their interests – whether as a major, minor, second major, or simply a student fulfilling a math requirement – and we’re constantly developing and adapting courses in popular and timely topics like data science and machine learning.
In a nutshell, Math is interesting, exciting and challenging. The Mathematics degree at Duke University offers clarity and gives you the satisfaction of knowing when you have the right answer to a problem.
Key Features
Mathematics is a powerful and versatile major. Students with degrees in mathematics are highly sought after in a variety of industries because employers know that success in mathematics requires strong problem solving abilities and outstanding analytical skills.
Careers
Studying mathematics develops such skills as arguing logically and rigorously, thinking abstractly, formulating and solving problems, analyzing data, and creating and analyzing mathematical models. Employers value these skills so consequently, math majors find themselves in demand by employers for careers in a wide spectrum of fields.
A bachelor's degree in mathematics will prepare you for jobs in statistics, actuarial sciences, mathematical modeling, cryptography, and mathematics education, as well as prepare you for graduate school leading to a research career in engineering, mathematics or statistics. A strong background in mathematics is also necessary for research in many areas of computer science and social science. Below is a sample list of the many fields where math majors are in demand.
