Overview
Key facts
Denmark is the gateway to Scandinavia and the North Atlantic, and Danish is officially the second language in Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland.
We offer three levels of instruction in Danish at UW (beginning, intermediate and advanced). Each autumn quarter a new sequence of Danish starts with DAN 101. If you already speak some Danish, you may test into a higher level for Credit by Examination. As a UW student, you are encouraged to study in Denmark via UW Study Abroad and are eligible for a UW ScanDesign Fellowship and other scholarships, including the Gytel Scholarship and the Metzon and Nielsen Scholarships for Danish Studies.
The Department of Scandinavian has an undergraduate major and minor in Danish. The Danish program from University of Washington offers a current European perspective on culture, gender, politics and society, as well as cinema, folklore, history and literature. The UW faculty in Danish consists of a full professor as well as a Visiting Lecturer in Danish.
With admission to our Graduate Program, qualified students holding a BA may pursue the MA or PhD degree in Scandinavian Studies with an emphasis in Danish.

By earning a B.A. in Danish, students gain experience with a culture whose global influences have been as wide-ranging as hygge and LEGO. Students build advanced linguistic skills through a three-year program in language and literature. They enhance their worldview with cultural surveys of Denmark, Scandinavia, and the Baltics; specialized courses on literature and culture; and affordable abroad opportunities in diverse academic disciplines. General requirements
- All freshman applicants will self-report their courses on the application. A minimum level of preparation in six subject areas must be met for admission.
- The writing section is a required and important part of your application. Please note that the UW essay questions must be answered within our application. For the Common App, that means within our UW questions. We do not consider the Common App essay.
- The UW no longer requires SAT or ACT scores for most applicants. Homeschooled applicants and applicants who come from schools with non-standard grading practices that do not have letter or numeric grades are still required to submit SAT or ACT scores.
- Do not send high school or college transcripts unless you receive a request from the Office of Admissions. The application asks you to provide a detailed account of your academic coursework, and that’s all we need to review your application.
