About Psychology at Midwestern State University

The acquisition of a broad knowledge base in psychology. Our students are typically amazed at the breadth of Psychology. In addition to counseling and clinical psychology, psychologists work in schools, industrial & organizational psychology, vocational counseling, consumer psychology, psychological testing and assessment, environmental psychology, human factors, forensic psychology, and a host of other specialties. There truly is “something for everyone” in psychology.

An understanding of research methods in psychology. Our students develop an appreciation for the fact that psychology is a science—the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Students gain marketable hands-on experience with data collection and the statistical analysis of data through coursework and extracurricular research projects with the faculty. Although most psychologists work in applied disciplines, these applications are based on theories of mind and behavior developed through basic and applied research.

The ability to think critically. Our students develop an appreciation for the value of clear, reasoned judgment based on objective facts. Perhaps more than any other major, the study of psychology enhances awareness of how we come to know, believe, and feel as we do. Students study cognitive biases and distortions, influence techniques, logical fallacies, and the design of sound and reasoned arguments.
