Through an analysis and exploration of issues central in our personal lives, our communities, our nation, and the world sociology has become one of humankind's major sources of self-awareness in the 21st century.
Sociologists study a variety of topics including family dynamics, crime and deviance, work and occupations, social welfare, health care, social movements, and race, social class, and gender inequalities.
The Sociology program at Eastern Illinois University provides a liberal arts education which develops an ability to think critically and analytically - abilities highly desirable to employers and widely marketable.
The goals of the Sociology program are to:
- Provide students with an understanding of the organization, structure, and change of society.
- Analyze the social causes and consequence of human behavior.
- Teach students the analytical skills necessary to understand and interpret statistical data, research questions related to society and social behavior, and test sociological theories.
- Assist students in the development of effective critical thinking and communication skills.

General requirements
- Official records (transcripts or mark sheets) beginning with secondary school. A minimum grade point average of a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required. All transcripts become property of this University.
- English Language Proficiency Requirement
- A completed International Student Financial Affidavit Form and a bank statement (submitted online via MyEIU account), documenting sufficient funding for the intended program of study.
- A passport copy is required.
- Non-refundable application fee of $30.00 U.S. in the form of a check, certified check or money order made payable to Eastern Illinois University, application fee is valid for one year.
