Overview
The Child and Family Studies - Family Studies program of the Southeast Missouri State University prepares students for a variety of positions that focus on families or family members at all stages of the life continuum in social service, government and education.
Southeast’s family studies program is an approved Certified Family Life Educator program. The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) oversees our program, which includes course work that follows the standards and criteria needed for students to become Provisional Certified Family Life Educators.
What You'll Do
- Gain an in-depth understanding of family structures, dynamics and interactions along with developmental issues across the lifespan.
- Develop skills in assessing, creating and implementing interventions to improve family interactions.
- Be trained to work with a wide variety of populations and have the opportunity to work part-time or volunteer in one of our three state licensed centers that serve children, seniors and developmentally disabled adults.
- Be offered “real world” experiences through placement in agencies and programs serving young children and parents, pregnant teens, senior adults, low-income families, and the community.

General requirements
- Successful completion of Level 5 of Southeast’s IEP.
- English proficiency tests
- Diploma from a U.S. high school
- Diploma from an international school with U.S. regional accreditation
- Diploma from IB curriculum school whose sole medium of instruction is English
- Diploma from a non-U.S. high school/secondary education where English language is the sole medium of instruction.
- SAT test score of 450 or higher on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section.
- A score of 21 or better Combined English/Writing score on the ACT Plus Writing test
- Successful completion of Level 112 in the ELS Language School
- Other proof of English proficiency may be considered on an individual basis.
