What You'll Do

Majors of the English Education program of the Southeast Missouri State University will have the opportunity to have three field experiences in secondary schools with mentor teachers before their last semester.

During the last semester, the student teaching field experience lasts sixteen weeks at one school.

The Techniques of Teaching English course is taught by an instructor with a successful public school career.

Our teacher candidates are encouraged to attend professional development events including the Southeast Missouri English Teachers Association and Write To Learn Conferences, where they have met English Education experts including Kyleen Beers and Jim Burke.

Internships and Career Opportunities

Our graduates are teaching in Southeast Missouri secondary schools including Scott County Central, Poplar Bluff, Charleston, and Sikeston. Graduates are also teaching in local high schools including Notre Dame Catholic High, Jackson, Cape Central, and the Cape Central Academy. Ste. Genevieve, Fredericktown and DeSoto High Schools have also recently chosen our English Education graduates. In the St. Louis area, school districts including Francis Howell, Kirkwood and Pattonville have employed our teacher candidates.

One of our majors currently teaching at Cape Central was chosen as an MACTE Outstanding Beginning Teacher in the state of Missouri.

In addition, our graduates have been accepted into Master’s programs including those at St. Louis University and Southern Illinois University.

Some graduates choose to stay at Southeast to pursue their Master’s degrees in English and work in our department as teaching assistants.

Successful completion of Level 5 of Southeast’s IEP.

English proficiency tests

Diploma from a U.S. high school

Diploma from an international school with U.S. regional accreditation

Diploma from IB curriculum school whose sole medium of instruction is English

Diploma from a non-U.S. high school/secondary education where English language is the sole medium of instruction.

SAT test score of 450 or higher on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section.

A score of 21 or better Combined English/Writing score on the ACT Plus Writing test

Successful completion of Level 112 in the ELS Language School

Other proof of English proficiency may be considered on an individual basis.
