About

The faculty embrace and model principles of academic integrity, equality and diversity, tolerance and inclusion, by exposing students to a variety of interpretations and specializations in the fields of history and philosophy. 

Philosophy majors from University of Tennessee Martin are expected to:

  • Identify classic philosophical theories in metaphysics and epistemology;
  • Differentiate diverse perspectives in ethical, political and aesthetic theories of value     
  • Apply the main rules of logic and argumentation 
  • Compare major people and movements within the history of philosophy

Programme Structure

With challenging curricula designed to emphasize critical examination, informed expression, ethical awareness, and an advanced understanding of how people, events, and ideas of the past influence the present and future, the Department of History and Philosophy prepares students for life as productive, responsible citizens with skills integral to a broad range of careers and the ability to pursue a graduate education in the fields of history, philosophy, law, teaching, and theology.

  • Submit the $30 application fee when you complete the application (
  • Send your official high school transcript to the UT Martin Office of Admissions.
  • Send us your official ACT and/or SAT scores. 
  • Upon graduation, request that a final high school transcript be sent to the Admissions Office. If you received a GED, request a GED transcript be sent to UT Martin
  • If you have completed dual credit coursework while in high school, have a copy of your official dual credit transcript sent to the UT Martin Admissions Office directly from the college where you earned the credit. *Not required if your dual credit was taken with UT Martin*
