Overview
Upon graduation from the Chemistry program offered by South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, students have knowledge of chemical and physical phenomena at the molecular level. They are expected to possess the skills of critical thinking in chemical problem-solving, such as instrumental data interpretation for molecular structure characterization, and to be familiar with the chemical literature.
Students are expected to have a command of the five major sub-disciplines of chemistry:
- analytical chemistry
- biochemistry
- inorganic chemistry
- organic chemistry
- physical chemistry
Our Chemistry Graduates
Our graduates use their degrees as a solid foundation for advanced study in chemistry as well as for study in medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, forensic science, materials science, environmental science, medical technology, physical therapy, patent or environmental law, and education. These fields are all possibilities for students with a chemistry education. Likewise, students who opt not to further their education beyond their BS in chemistry are prepared for a wide variety of employment opportunities. Former chemistry graduates have gone on to careers in research and quality assurance positions in academic, industrial, governmental, and private sectors of the economy, as well as careers in medicine.
Co-ops and Internships
Through cooperative education (co-ops) and internships, School of Mines students have many opportunities to apply their education to "real world" work experiences. Students are employed by industry and government agencies in positions related to Chemistry or Applied Biological Sciences. Students may gain 1-3 hours of academic credit for their co-op or internship experience upon department approval.
