About

From Calculus and Differential Equations, to Theory of Computation, Computer Architecture and Assembly Languages, to Algorithm Design, Analysis and Combinatorics, The Lewis and Clark College Mathematics program's curriculum combines traditional concepts and classical principles with 21st century technologies and theories.

Overview

The Department of Mathematical Sciences from Lewis and Clark College offers three majors: mathematics; computer science and mathematics; and computer science. There are also two minors: one in mathematics and one in computer science. At the heart of the Mathematics curriculum is the development of conceptual and computational intuition, sophistication in the analysis of complicated structures and, most importantly, the interplay of these two with broadly based sets of technical skills and techniques.

Goals

  • Practice. We require that our students understand and perform mathematical symbolic manipulations, be proficient at using deductive reasoning and proofs, and be adept at using mathematical technology.
  • Communication. We expect mathematics majors to be able to construct mathematical proofs, and to communicate mathematically with others in both written and verbal form.
  • Context. We want our students to situate their practice and communication of mathematics within its larger intellectual and social context.
  • Passion. Finally, we hope that our students develop a passion for something mathematical.
