Overview

The Art Studio program at Sonoma State University welcomes students of all backgrounds, religious identification, sexual identity, race, and ethnicity. We are working actively to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community for learning and creation to which each individual can bring their whole self. We recognize that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not only morally necessary, but benefit everyone. Intellectual and creative work fully flourishes in healthy environments with a range of perspectives and experiences. The faculty also recognize that this happens not through the absence of overt racism and discrimination, but through proactive efforts to create, maintain, and expand diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The fields of art and art history have not lived up to these ideals historically and presently. Art has served many purposes, some of them less than just. Access to galleries, museums, and art commissions have not been equally distributed. Art history as a discipline has its origins in nineteenth-century nationalism in Europe. Museums grew in and through colonialism. But we are not beholden to the past. We study it because we must do better.

Career Opportunities Relating to the Major

Whether in art history, art studio or gallery and museum management, programs in the Department of Art and Art History are committed to academic excellence and the acquisition of skills of visual analysis and synthesis. We offer basic skills and access to new technologies as sound preparation for graduate study and teaching, as well as for professional careers in the arts. In addition, as preparation for entering a diversity of related fields, students may combine knowledge of the arts with expertise in a second area, such as business, law, film and television, museum, gallery or archival management. Complete a high/secondary school curriculum which totals 12 years of primary-secondary education, and earn a graduation diploma or certificate
Complete high school curriculum with above satisfactory grades or marks which equals a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) on the 4.0 grading scale
Submit official high school transcript (academic record), showing all courses with grades or marks, and graduation diploma or certificate. Official transcript must be in the original language of issue. Submit certified English translations for non-English documents
Submit official verification of English proficiency except where English is the applicant's native language and has attended for at least three years’ full time at an institution where English was the principal language of instruction
