Overview

Students of the English programme of Colgate University are strongly encouraged to elect more than the required number of courses and to support their studies in English with appropriate courses in art, music, history, the literatures of other languages, and the classics.

Students majoring in English complete at least nine courses, including at least two survey courses. Survey courses encompass a broad range of material, allowing students to appreciate how writers influence one another and observe (and perhaps reconsider) canonicity, that is, how some writers have come to be considered more significant than others. Survey courses are normally completed at the 200 level.

Career:

English study provides an excellent basis for professional programs in law, journalism, publishing, and business as well as for graduate study in literature, the theater, or creative writing.
