Overview

Spanish is the most common language in the U.S. after English, and it’s the official language in more than 20 countries worldwide. Majoring in Spanish allows you to develop practical language and critical thinking skills that are applicable to any career field.

The Spanish major at Manhattan College is interdisciplinary and includes study of the culture, history and geography of the countries where Spanish is spoken. In addition to courses focusing on grammar, composition and conversation, Spanish classes examine topics including:

  • Caribbean culture
  • Women in Hispanic literature
  • Masterpieces of Hispanic literature

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3.4

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.4 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • 1. Official High School Transcript
  • 2. SAT and/or ACT Scores: Critical reading and math sections of the SAT are reviewed during the admissions process.
  • 3. Recommendation Letter: One letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor is required. You may submit up to three academic letters. 
  • 4. Personal Essay: You must submit a brief personal statement or college essay. This essay should be roughly 500 words.
  • 5. $75 Non-Refundable Application Fee
  • 6.International students whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency by submitting official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores.
