Overview

When you study Social Science at Oregon State University, you benefit from OSU's strength in environmental sciences and sustainability.

Professor Elizabeth Marino's research looks at the challenges facing communities affected by climate change and other disasters. She was appointed by the White House as a delegate to the Second Arctic Science Ministerial, an international meeting in Berlin.

Marino was the only social scientist on the United States delegation. Her contributions focused on strategic planning for communities affected by rising sea levels.

About the Degree

Students can pursue a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree in social science with an option in community development and leadership.
You will investigate the social and cultural dynamics in our communities, explore how these dynamics impact the development of sustainable communities, and examine how effective community leadership impacts positive social change.

You will gain fundamental skills in communication, political science, anthropology, environmental science and where these fields intersect with the arts and sciences.

Areas of investigation include wellness, place, dwelling, food and community, migration and sense of place, sustainable communication, and community dialogue and public environments.
One of the most distinctive features of this program is that most programs of its kind are graduate certificate programs; this is an undergraduate degree program.

3.0 GPA High school diploma or IB Diploma with minimum overall score of 26 or IGCSE 5 subjects with a 3.0 average using NCAA scale (9-7/A=4, 5-6/B/C=3, 4/D/E=2, F/G=1, 3-1/U=0). Subjects must include Math, English, Science, 2 electives.
English Test Scores must be less than two years old as of the start term requested. Applicants may also use the following achievements to meet the English Requirements for admission to an undergraduate degree program.
SAT: evidence-based reading/writing score of 560
ACTE (ACT English) - 21
Two English composition courses (Writing 121+) with grades C- or better or one English composition and one Speech Communication course (Communication 111+) with grades C- or better, all from a US university.
IGCSE O or A Level English with a grade of C or better (provisional results not accepted)
IB Diploma: Language A - Language and Literature (HL) with a minimum score of 5
AP English L & C - minimum score of 3
