Overview
The focus of the ABET accredited BSET program is on applied systems technology, preparing graduates for careers in process and systems design, technical sales, and manufacturing operations, among other areas.
The second degree is offered at our distance locations across western North Carolina, concentrating on technical operations. The Engineering Technology curriculum is designed for career-focused working adults who wish to pursue their degree through part-time study. The first two years of the program may be taken at any North Carolina Community College or on campus in Cullowhee. Students receive instruction through online courses and evening classes at off-site locations. This second program is not ABET accredited. Graduates of our ABET-accredited BSET program are landing outstanding jobs with employers in industries such as aerospace/aviation, automotive, online retail, heavy equipment, outdoor recreation, and many more.
What You'll Learn
Each Engineering Technology program furnishes students with the technical skills needed to succeed in their chosen careers. Students follow a rigorous curriculum building on a background of applied sciences and mathematics and emphasizes Project-based Learning (PBL). The applied systems technology degree places strong emphasis on the integration of theory and applications for mechanical systems, computer-based modeling, manufacturing and production processes, and related areas. Students in this concentration complete a two-semester senior capstone project for industrial sponsors under the guidance of faculty members and mentors. The technical operations degree features courses from the disciplines of mathematics, english, engineering technology, electrical and computer disciplines, and mechanical disciplines. Courses include Technical Writing, Engineering Graphics, Engineering Analysis, Electrical Systems, Project Managment, and 3-D Modeling.

With a degree in engineering technology from Western Carolina University, graduates enter careers in product design and development, manufacturing operations, applied systems design, maintenance and project management, engineering and technical sales, and service functions in industrial and manufacturing settings and government agencies depending on the degree option selected. Career specialties include production manager, consultant, quality control supervisor, industrial designer, cost estimator, safety engineer, personnel or facilities manager, and technical education instructor. Graduates of the Applied Systems Technology program are eligible to sit for the Professional Engineering exam.
