Highlights

Examining history, literature, visual media, performance, and other forms of expression, we explore the processes of cultural definition as contested by diverse individuals and groups. We ask new questions about aspects of American life long taken for granted; we also use American culture as a laboratory for testing classic and contemporary theories about how cultures work.

The American Studies major at Williams College requires 10 courses, including AMST 101 (America: the Nation and Its Discontents), 301 (Theory and Methods in American Studies), and one 400-level designated senior seminar. Majors must also choose one of four specializations, and the remaining seven courses must include either five in the chosen specialization and one each in two other specializations, or four in the specialization and one in all three remaining specializations.
