Overview
The Sculpture programme at the University of South Dakota provides students with a rigorous environment to develop their unique artistic voice and technical proficiency. Through a combination of intensive studio practice and creative problem-solving, learners explore the boundaries of three-dimensional art. The curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking while providing numerous exhibition opportunities across the region and the nation.
Why Sculpture at the University of South Dakota?
Students benefit from the only College of Fine Arts in the state, gaining access to exceptional facilities and a supportive creative community. The department features a massive 7,046-square-foot sculpture studio equipped with professional-grade tools for woodworking and metal fabrication. Facilities include MIG and TIG welders, a gas forge, a dedicated mold-making area, and specialized exhibition spaces for both indoor and outdoor installations.
A distinctive highlight of the department is the "Little Pour on the Prairie," South Dakota’s first public iron pour event. This community-based celebration attracts artists and enthusiasts from across the country, offering students hands-on experience with iron casting on a significant scale. Additionally, the Sculpture Culture student group allows majors to build leadership skills and collaborate on design projects within the local community.
