Overview
The English Major (Bachelor of Arts) at University of Massachusetts Boston:
- Offers a wide range of traditional core courses and exciting electives.
- Connects you to professors in small discussion-based classes. Hone your reading, writing, and thinking skills by working side-by-side with your professors and fellow students.
- Enables you to add areas of concentration to your major. Most majors do a straightforward English major of 11 courses, but you can add focus to the major by concentrating in Creative Writing; Professional & New Media Writing; Race, Ethnicity, and Literature; or English Teaching Licensure.
- Offers numerous extracurriculars, ranging from our Sigma Tau Delta Honors Society to our Literary Theory Reading Group.
- Provides opportunities to engage in the local community through our relationships with organizations that focus on social justice, equity, and inclusion.
- Offers internships as a capstone option.
- Prepares you for a job search, offering a one-credit mini-course on “English 457: Careers in English and Preparing for the Job Market.”
- Connects you to a dynamic department! The English department offers exciting events—such as guest speakers, creative writing readings, and our six-word story contest—that are free and open to the UMass Boston community.
Careers in English
As an English major, the skills you develop and the tasks you practice are valuable and marketable assets for many career paths.
If English is a natural choice for you and you want to work in education, journalism, publishing, or as a writer, more options and opportunities exist than you may expect. For example, the digital content world we now live in provides opportunities in many fields for content creators, editors, strategists, and managers. The global marketplace has made international teaching a permanent job for those interested in travel and new experiences.
If you're less certain that an English major is the right choice for you, know that the skills you will learn can be applied to more professional possibilities than ever before, leading to jobs in advertising/marketing, public relations, investor relations, law, information technology, business management, and more.
