Overview

The program's rigorous curriculum will provide you a deeper understanding of music across a broad variety of styles. You'll draw upon centuries of music research — from Ancient Greece to today — to develop the critical thinking and listening skills needed to best articulate what you find interesting and beautiful about music.

The Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theory at the University of North Texas faculty members offer expert guidance in areas ranging from ancient music to contemporary popular music, with in-depth study in Western music from the Renaissance to contemporary post-tonal practices.

They've earned recognitions from the Society for Music Theory, the American Musicological Society and the Society for Ethnomusicology for their work. In addition to their scholarly contributions, many are nationally and internationally known award-winning musicians and performers.

Programme Structure

Courses included:

Music composition

Learning the craft of counterpoint in 16th- and 18th-century styles

Studying form and harmonic analysis

12 credit hours of lessons in voice or an instrument and 2 credit hours of secondary piano (If your instrument is the piano, you'll complete 2 credit hours of lessons in another instrument or in voice.)

Two years of French or German language courses

Schenkerian analysis and post-tonal analytical methods

Completing a senior research project to help you acquire the investigative skills needed to prepare for graduate school and teach at a university

Participating in a student ensemble each fall and spring semester
