Key features

As a Modern Dance student at the University of Utah, you will be part of a contemporary dance community distinguished by its sense of excellence, professionalism, humanism, and a proud commitment to a lively spirit of creative inquiry: the degree is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD) and ranked as one of the top programs in the country. All incoming undergraduate students must audition for admission into the Department of Modern Dance. Upon admission, the curriculum includes courses in movement, technique, improvisation, musical theory, cultural dance forms, and kinesiology. Students also gain experience in teaching methods through practicums in elementary and secondary schools. This coursework ultimately prepares dancers for a professional career in performance, choreography, and teaching.

The Student Experience

For a more enriching academic experience, consider completing an internship or joining a dance organization. Students may participate in the Performing Dance Company, the Salt Dance Fest, or Grey Matters: Dance for Parkinson’s to enhance their performance skills. Additional degree enrichment is available in the form of research projects and study abroad programs. Outside of the classroom, be sure to network and plan for your future by joining ArtsForce, a student-led initiative to offer workshops, events, and career advice to College of Fine Arts majors and minors. Additionally, students can also join the Dance Club.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Modern Dance program are well-prepared for a variety of careers in the arts. Alumni have gone on to work as dancers, choreographers, artistic directors, teachers, videographers, and administrators. Your skills can be applied to jobs both in the United States and abroad, allowing you the flexibility to travel or live nearly anywhere as you pursue an exciting career in dance. Students who continue their studies at the graduate level can become university professors; with additional certification, you can also find work as a dance therapist.
