Overview

The skills taught by Department of Theatre faculty prepare students for successful careers in the commercial and nonprofit entertainment industries as well as a range of other professions. In the Theatre program of Vanderbilt University students excel in any field that involves oral and written communication; collaboration and teamwork; critical thinking and analytical reasoning; problem solving; decision making; or ethical judgement. Our curriculum and production activities also prepare students for graduate study in a variety of disciplines.

Theatre department alumni are part of many distinguished professional theatre companies across the nation, television networks in New York, and the film industry in Los Angeles as writers, actors, directors, designers, technicians, dramaturgs, stage managers, and administrators.

Theatre alumni also apply their major as teachers, lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and professionals in many other industries. The practice of theatre encourages individuals to collaborate within a production team, to express elements of abstract thought in oral and written form, and to develop the critical ability to assess and analyze aesthetic choices, making a theatre degree attractive to potential employers who value critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
