The primary purpose of the Art Education program at the University of Georgia is to prepare art teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels in order to promote the role of the visual arts in learning; to nurture aesthetic understanding, to foster critical thinking abilities, and to develop visual literacy.


Students may also work toward careers with other agencies and institutions such as community centers and art museums. The BFA degree is a prerequisite for initial teacher certification.

What you will learn

The B.F.A. in Art Education at University of Georgia requires 126 hours, which is six hours more than the University norm of 120 hours. The student must also be admitted to Teacher Education. A 2.5 GPA must be maintained to remain in the Teacher Education program. No grade below C in major courses will be accepted.

Students are required to take 45 hours in art courses beyond the 18 that are required in Area VI of the core curriculum, including painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, a studio sequence, 12 hours of studio electives at the 3000/4000 level, 6 hours in Art Education, and 9 hours in Art History at the 3000/4000 level. In addition, they must take 18 hours in professional Education including 9 in Student Teaching.
