History
VIVES University of Applied Sciences emerged from the merger of two universities of applied sciences in West Flanders, KHBO in the north of the province and KATHO in the south. When the first academic year of VIVES University of Applied Sciences started on September 18th 2013, VIVES was immediately one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Flanders.
Education
VIVES University of Applied Sciences, with its modern and competence-based higher education, its innovative practical research, and its services provided to society, offers an adequate response to the social challenges of today and tomorrow. VIVES is appreciative, friendly, and people-oriented which concentrates on professionally oriented Bachelor Degrees. In doing so we ensure that our students contribute to the globalised world both as human beings and as professionals. This is reflected in the motto of VIVES: Design (Y)our Future.
VIVES opts to give centre stage to responsibility and ownership, and appreciation and respect for each individual. Sustainability is another important commitment for VIVES.Research
VIVES involves students in research as often as possible. This is important to us because the graduates are going to work in a professional practice that is constantly and rapidly changing.
It is important that they are able to carry out research and apply results, or have them carried out, so that there is continuous innovation.
Together with institutions and companies, we formulate our research questions and we actively involve staff and students in the research. We aim for an intensive knowledge exchange and co-creation through all kinds of forms of cooperation. Current issues and themes from the work field (partly) determine VIVES' research agenda.Career

Student services
The student's voice counts! Participation opportunities within VIVES are available at various levels. Each year we look for students who love extra challenges as student representatives.
They do this by:
- Giving their opinion about things you experience as a student;
- Organizing fun activities for your fellow students;
- Voicing the opinions of fellow students;
- Developing things together with our staff;
- Bringing in new ideas or helping to give existing things a new look
Housing services
In September 2014 VIVES University of Applied Sciences opened a brand new student residence in Kortrijk. This building offers housing to as many as 80 Erasmus students. In addition to the rooms for Erasmus students, there is also accommodation reserved for 25 Belgian students. It is a vibrant student community of mixed nationalities, right in the centre of town.
In Bruges we rent the 4th floor with 18 student rooms at residence Studio Bruges - Frank van Ackerepromenade 8, Bruges. As from September 2022 on, there will be a new student residence next to the campus in the Xaverianenstraat.
All rooms have their own private bathroom and shared kitchen.Library services
VIVES University of Applied Sciences has four libraries, one at each of its campuses, in Brugge, Torhout, Kortrijk and Roeselare. If you're doing research for a paper, our friendly staff is always there to help you out. Ask them how they can assist you. Many resources, both books and magazines, are available in English.
ICT services
VIVES has an IT service desk that is available for student via email and phone. Students can access the service desk by going to the corresponding webpage.
Medical services
VIVES does not offer healthcare on campus but the International Office supports students in case of illness or diseases.
Check your own Health Services and ask for a proof of your right for medical cover abroad.
Non-EU-students should check with a private insurance company.
The insurance package must include hospitalisation, dental care and repatriation. Medical costs are extremely high in Belgium.
Campus life
VIVES Universities of Applied Sciences is spread over 7 campuses in 5 cities. Each campus has several student restaurants or canteens. The campuses are located either in the city centre or nearby. Students receive a bus-ticket for free to use public transport at their study place. Together with ‘Mobiel’, VIVES offers the possibility to rent a bike for a monthly fee of €6. Throughout the academic year VIVES organizes and sponsor a lot of great sports and cultural activities that should make your life as a student on and around campus a lot more fun.
Sports facilities
There’s lots to experience around your campus, and certainly not just in classrooms and text books! STUVO is mad about sports and they try to spoil our students with a varied range of low-cost activities. Your student card will give you great discounts at many sports centres, and they also organises all kinds of super events designed especially for the students.
Student clubs
There are Student Associations in all campuses. In the beginning of the academic year, info sessions are organised, and possibilities offered to become a member.
Accreditation
- Accreditation takes place every 5 years by the NVAO (Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Commission) which, after an internal analysis and an extensive audit, recognises the degrees of the university and grants the permission to offer quality education in the coming years.
- The accreditation commissions consist of professionally qualified specialists from the wider society, educationalists from similar programmes, and experts in the field of education.
