Moorhead became the site for a new normal school in Northwestern Minnesota after State Senator Solomon Comstock introduced a bill to the Minnesota State Legislature in 1885, declaring "…it would be a fine thing for the Red River Country and especially for Moorhead."

Student Senate is the officially recognized voice of the Student Body at MSUM. It strives to be a democratic forum, generating opinions in the form of motions that represent the will of the Student Body. It advocates to the administration of the university, Minnesota State system, local, state, and federal governments. Student Senate also implements projects that will help further the sense of community and involvement on campus, helping make things run further for the Students on our campus.
