Four respected partners – Barony, Elmwood and Oatridge Colleges and SAC – merged in 2012 to become Scotland’s Rural College – SRUC. We exist to deliver comprehensive skills, education and business support for Scotland’s land-based industries, founded on world class and sector-leading research, education and consultancy.

Our Research Strategy

To do excellent strategic and applied research on the global and local food security issues, and to actively support the translation of research results into practice. Our research ethos is strongly collaborative, and we have a long history of industrial, NGO and academic partnerships locally and internationally.

Student services

SRUC has a long tradition of welcoming students from the European Union and other countries to come and study with us.

We are active in engaging with other educational institutions around the world in order to work in collaborative research and education projects and student exchange programmes.

We have found that overseas students greatly enhance the learning experience for our UK students, as they often have unique viewpoints and life experiences which are of great value in improving the understanding of differences around the world.

If you are an overseas student and would like to study with SRUC you should find lots of information to guide you!

Housing services

SRUC has access to a range of accommodation available for students, either on campus, in arrangement with partner universities or in the local area. This includes Halls of Residence at some campuses.

New students are given priority for places in SRUC accommodation, and assistance is available to help students find accommodation in the private sector.

Accommodation details are sent to applicants to whom an offer is made.

Library services

SRUC has libraries at Aberdeen, Ayr, Edinburgh, Barony, Elmwood and Oatridge campuses.

Each library has a full collection of books and journals focused on the subjects taught at that campus. You may borrow books and use the facilities at all campus libraries.  Access to electronic resources is also provided for staff and students.

ICT services

Our bright and well-equipped boardroom is ideal for both formal and informal meetings. The stylish table seats eight comfortably and there is an additional area with easy chairs and window seating. Facilities include: • laptop with internet access • overhead projector • access to wi-fi network • small kitchen • administrative support

Student Life

Campus life

  • Aberdeen campus is located on the Craibstone Estate, about 5 miles from the centre of the City of Aberdeen.
  • Ayr campus is located on a state-of-the-art campus on the riverside, right in Ayr town centre.
  • Barony campus is located on the Barony Estate in the rolling landscape of Dumfries and Galloway.
  • Edinburgh campus is located on the University of Edinburgh's King's Buildings Campus on the south side of the City of Edinburgh.
  • Elmwood Campus is situated in the town of Cupar, North East Fife, only 9 miles from St. Andrews.
  • Oatridge campus stands on its own 283-hectare estate in the West Lothian countryside and it is within easy reach of the City of Edinburgh.

Sports facilities

There are different sports facilities available at each SRUC campus, ranging from gym and fitness equipment to playing fields, golf courses and ridding paddocks.

We are a designated higher education institution and are recognised by the Scottish Funding Council as a Small Specialist Institution. SRUC also receives funding from the Scottish Government Rural and Environmental Science and Analytical Services Division for research and consulting activity.
