Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina, is a historically black public research university located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States. It is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. WSSU is an accredited university offering baccalaureate and graduate programs to a diverse student population.

Founded in 1892, WSSU enjoys a distinguished reputation as a historically black constituent institution of the University of North Carolina that offers a rich curriculum rooted in a high-quality, liberal education. We have been recognized as a national leader in higher education: U.S. News and World Report named WSSU one of the Top Public Schools in the U.S. and one of the Top Black Colleges.


One goal of the General Education curriculum is to expose students to the broad array of subject matter that make up the academy. Sampling among course offerings in the arts, humanities, sciences and mathematics provides students with the opportunity to explore discipline based approaches to understanding the world around them, thus cultivating new lenses from which to view themselves and the human condition. At Winston-Salem State University, students are required to complete at least one course from each of the following areas of knowledge:

Winston-Salem State University is well known for the strength of the programs that it offers. As our programs have evolved, WSSU has focused on improving the student experience by incorporating research into the curriculum and extracurricular. The mission of WSSU Office of Student Research is to further enhance student learning through research opportunities.

Participation in Student Research is a “high impact practice” as not only do students benefit while they are on campus through increased student learning and success, but benefits are often seen post-graduation as well.


Career Development Services (CDS) works with WSSU students and alumni during all phases of the career development process. Career Development Services offers a full range of resources and services to assist you in developing the necessary strategies and skills which will distinguish you as a professional. CDS staff members want to help you learn about your skills and interests, and articulate them confidently in resumes, cover letters, interviews, and personal statements; identify and explore career options that you might pursue; and implement an effective strategy to attain your desired career outcomes.

Student services

The Student Centers Office features two unique facilities devoted to meeting the demanding responsibility of serving students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guest. This Office provides facilities, programs, services, leadership, and involvement opportunities that enhance the social, educational, recreational and cultural environment of Winston-Salem State University.

Housing services

Winston-Salem State University has the Cleon F. Thompson, Jr. Student Services Center and the Donald Julian Reaves Student Activities Center (DJR). Traditionally "student centers" are better known as "student unions" and function as the "living room" of the University. We are excited about our new addition, The Donald Julian Reaves Student Activities Center, as it brings back the traditional atmosphere of the "student union".

Library services

The C.G. O'Kelly Library creates an environment that supports and enhances all Winston-Salem State University programs. The staff instructs and assists users with all aspects of library services to foster and instill life-long learning.

ICT services

Winston-Salem State University has invested in providing our students, faculty, staff and visitors with world class technology services. University systems ordered from Dell or Lenovo will be configured with the current Microsoft operating system and supporting utilities for your specific hardware configuration.

Our Health Care Delivery Method consists of an integrated evidence-based care team delivery model (Patient Centered Medical Home Model). Components include the following:

Student Life

Campus life

The campus has more than 40 buildings covering 117 acres (0.47 km2). WSSU's Diggs Gallery was recognized as one of the top African-American galleries in its region.

Sports facilities

A sport club is defined as a registered student organization, which exists to promote and develop interest in a particular sport or physical activity. These interests can be competitive, recreational, or instructional in nature. Clubs may represent the university in intercollegiate competition or conduct intra-club activities such as practice, instruction, social and tournament play. Sport clubs are student initiated and student managed. Involvement in a sport club enhances the students' college experience and contributes to the students' overall education.

Student clubs

University Student Activities and Engagement disseminates budget information, coordinates workshops and informal sessions to student groups on organizational development and leadership topics such as publicity and promotion, time management, motivation, and assessing appropriate leadership styles. University Student Activities and Engagement seeks to reinforce academic learning and retention while stimulating appreciation of cultural differences, civility, expression of ideas, citizenship, creativity, leadership development and an earnest desire for social justice. Organizations are encouraged to apply for assistance to support their programming needs.


Winston-Salem State is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees.
