Named after engineer, military leader and public administrator Sir John Monash, Monash University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1958. When our first students began their studies at our foundation campus in Clayton in 1961, we became the first university established in the state of Victoria in over 100 years.
Monash motto Ancora Imparo ("I am still learning") reminds us that the search for knowledge never ends. Monash is fired with a restless ambition that pushes us to do things better, to set new benchmarks and to break new ground.
It’s a certain drive to question the answers and go beyond convention that makes research at Monash different. We believe that great research, when properly applied, can lead to lasting and positive change in the world.

Community means safety, friendship, support and wellbeing. A vital part of preparing yourself for a life of learning, innovation and exploration is the opportunity to meet and learn from one another. This is what living on campus, or in "Res" offers.
For students who live on campus, university life continues beyond the classrooms. Every residence has a long list of activities to help you meet people, stay connected, form study groups and enjoy your time. Friends you make in Res may well become lifelong connections and form part of your social and professional networks well beyond graduation.
All Monash students have access to online resources to improve study habits. Libraries also host events throughout the year to improve research and learning skills.
Medical clinics are located at the Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula campuses. A team of qualified professional health-care providers staff the University Health Service and are available to provide a wide range of health care including travel advice and vaccinations, mental health, referrals, minor surgery, skin checks and pathology.
Monash has four Australian campuses on the lands of the Wurundjeri and the Boonwurrung people of the Kulin Nations. Each provides an environment that identifies and nurtures talent – and turns that talent into ability.
