History
The University at Albany has a rich history dating back more than 170 years.In 1844, a "normal school" was founded in Albany to train teachers for a rapidly growing population. For nearly 50 years, the Normal School provided a two-year education to students from across the state.

Research
The Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (CURCE) is an integral part of the University at Albany in the advancement of the mission, vision, and priorities. We make a daily investment in students who are on their path to identifying and exploring opportunities that will help them to develop competencies necessary to become engaged citizens.
CURCE provides students with access to experiences that enhance student success. Our team engages students as they explore opportunities that compliment and reinforce their classroom learning through research, scholarship, and creative activities on campus, in the community, and around the world.
Career
Our services are available to both current students and alumni who have graduated within the past five years. We also work with employers to help them connect with students.
- Career coaches guide students through challenges related to work and the professional world, making major and career decisions, pursuing future education and life after college.
- Employer Relations & Alumni Relations team members connect both regional and national employers to diverse student body through events, informational sessions and our Handshake system.
- Peer Career Advisors are highly trained, competitively selected undergraduate students who review resume and cover letters, and provide basic career assistance to other undergraduates.

Student services
The Center for International Education and Global Strategy is your connection to UAlbany's International resources. If you want to participate in UAlbany's growing global community, you are always welcome.
Housing services
Each of four residence quads on the Uptown Campus house approximately 1,200 students and include eight, three-story halls and a 23-story tower. Each quad includes lounges and recreational areas and three quads contain dining facilities. Nearby Freedom Apartments has apartment-style living, and Empire Commons provides single-room apartment-style living for 1,200 students. Liberty Terrace, an architecturally award-winning, environmentally friendly living complex, provides another 500 apartment-style beds. Housing is also available on Alumni Quad, located near the Downtown Campus.
Library services
Located on the west side of the academic podium, University Library houses collections as well as reference services, computer stations, study spaces, information literacy classes and much more.

ICT services
ITS offers numerous tools for teaching and learning and conducting University business from anywhere with an Internet connection. Campus technology resources can keep students, faculty and staff connected regardless of physical location.
Medical services
Student Health Services supports the academic performance and lifelong wellness of University at Albany students by providing compassionate, student-centered, quality health care, which is inclusive and respects the uniqueness of each individual.
Campus life
The University’s main campus was designed in 1961-62 by renowned American architect Edward Durell Stone.
The Downtown Campus is a classic Georgian-style complex that served from 1909-66 as the main campus. Recently renovated, it houses the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, the School of Criminal Justice, the School of Social Welfare and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
The Health Sciences Campus is one of the region's booming bioscience research and high-tech centers. Its academic anchor is the School of Public Health, and its research facilities include the Cancer Research Center, home to the GenNY*Sis Center for Excellence in Cancer Genomics, and the Center for Functional Genomics.
Sports facilities
Outdoor recreational facilities include lighted tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, and several multipurpose playing and intramural areas. John Fallon Field, dedicated to UAlbany men’s and women’s lacrosse, has seating capacity of 2,500. The Tom and Mary Casey Stadium, home to football and men's and women's soccer, opened in the fall of 2013.
Indoor athletic facilities are dominated by the SEFCU Arena. The facility is home to NCAA Division I Great Dane basketball, and also houses a running track, a modern fitness center, a fully equipped athletic training complex with whirlpools and other rehabilitative equipment, two main locker rooms and several smaller team locker rooms.

The University is chartered by the Board of Regents of New York State, which has registered all of its degrees and programs and fully approved its professional programs through the State Education Department.
