Marquette was founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius Loyola. The university is named after Rev. Jacques Marquette, S.J. (1637-75), a French missionary and explorer in North America.
The university supports research through several programs: three-year Way Klingler fellowships, sabbaticals for junior faculty and the Lawrence G. Haggerty Faculty Award for Research Excellence.

The Assembly exists outside of the administrative structure of the Libraries, serving as an advisory body to the Dean of Libraries.
