About

Education

Our educational programme is competence based. This means that, right from the start, you will be in close contact with professional life and practice. Supported by our teaching staff, you will work on your competences in a range of projects relating to applied research and practical internships. That is why choosing VHL means choosing a professional education, which you apply in real life!

Research

As a university of applied sciences, we conduct high-quality practice-based research which enhances both our teaching and our position as a research institute. As a research institute, we supply practice-based solutions for issues from national and international business and society. Alongside regular higher vocational study programmes, we also provide master’s programmes, postgraduate higher vocational training programmes and courses for regional, national and international students.

Career

Alumni (those who have graduated from a university) are the ambassadors of any training institute. They represent the training programme they have completed and often give something back, for example by providing guest lectures or masterclasses.

The school, in turn, is happy to provide former students with this opportunity, as it contributes to awareness of the school and the reputation in the field. Graduates from Van Hall Larenstein have their own LinkedIn page and associations in Leeuwarden and in Velp. Information days, lectures, symposiums, workshops, job interview training sessions, labour market surveys and career days are organised every year.

Services

Student services

Study mentors

You will meet your study mentor during one of the first weeks of your studies. The study mentor is your first contact point should you have study problems. You will consult with the study mentor about your study plan, study progress or about important choices during your studies. If you need assistance or if you want to have a conversation about personal matters, then you can go to one of the study mentors.

Housing services

There are various solutions for housing during your study, depending on the location of your campus. Student accommodation in The Netherlands differs from many other countries: most universities do not offer housing on campus and most Dutch students find their own accommodation on the private market.

Library services

The libraries are high-quality departments within Van Hall Larenstein. They are intensively used as places where users can meet, study, lounge and hold a meeting. The media collection is used very frequently and is suited to the needs of the various study programmes at each campus location. The libraries have long opening hours.

Student Life

Campus life

VHL University of Applied Sciences is based on two locations in the Netherlands: Leeuwarden and Velp. The environmentally friendly building in Leeuwarden has green houses on its roof. The Velp site is situated on the Larenstein estate – a wonderful area for the practical ‘green’ programmes.

Sports facilities

Besides studying, you probably also want to have a nice place to live, engage in sports, go out and meet other students. In Arnhem, which is close to Velp, you can eat your heart out at the Korenmarkt, the centre of activity in nightlife. Here you also find the sororities of the student associations.

Student clubs

Do you want to have a pleasant time while studying? It can be arranged. Leeuwarden has a rich student life. The city harbours five general student associations. Besides these, there is an active student association related to Van Hall Larenstein, called Osiris.

Moreover, there are working groups in each study programme. They organise all sorts of activities on behalf of the programmes. A number of associations and working groups have their own websites, on which you can read all about their activities, excursions, lectures and study activities. The associations and working groups guarantee a lot of fun, but also provide more depth to the contents of your study.

Accreditation

All programmes of Van Hall Larenstein are accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (in Dutch: NVAO). Every six years each programme has to renew this inspection mark. In order to accomplish this, a visitation-panel will assess the programme and produce a visitation report. Every cluster of programmes is visited in a different year.

Even though I‘m a first year student, I can already say a lot about the life of a typical university student. I have a lot of freetime, the workload is perfectly fine and the other students are super nice. The only think that really sucks is the whole organization of my study, which upsets a lot of people. But other than that, I enjoy studying at my university.
