Overview
Overview
The Psychology program at Valdosta State University offers students numerous opportunities to learn about the discipline both in and out of the classroom. Students have the opportunity to assist faculty members with research in areas such as memory, aging, and the relationship between technology and human behavior.
All psychology students are invited to join the Psychology Club, a popular campus group that includes guest lectures, trips, research opportunities and more. High achieving psychology students may be invited to join Psi Chi International Honor Society, which encourages the advancement of the science of psychology.
Students can also take advantage of the department’s summer study abroad trip to the Czech Republic, an innovative program in which students live on the campus of Palacky University, take courses in psychology and Czech cultural studies, and accompany faculty on excursions that include field observations. Or, join us for international study in London, one of the most culturally diverse and most fascinating cities in the world. We spend the summer studying and living in the historic Bloomsbury district of London close to some of the world’s finest museums and cultural sites.
Both degree programs in psychology introduce students to psychology as a scientific discipline and focus on methods to improve the human condition. Students learn to design, run and analyze research studies and write reports using discipline-appropriate style and language. Students in both degree programs begin with the same core psychology courses. Those in the Bachelor of Arts program must take foreign language courses, while those in the Bachelor of Science program take courses within natural sciences and mathematics. With consultation from an advisor, students in each program further distinguish their degrees with a series of carefully selected coursework. Students in both degree programs are prepared for a number of career alternatives in government, business, industry, health care and other areas and for professional or graduate school in psychology, law, physical or occupational therapy, social work, business and education.
