Overview

Students in the History program at Valdosta State University enjoy small upper-level classes and have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members, who are actively engaged in research and writing and regularly attend and present at national conferences. Students have numerous opportunities to strengthen their studies outside the classroom through organizations like Phi Alpha Theta, an international honor society for history students, and by participating in internships at historical sites, museums and other discipline-related venues. The department offers numerous study abroad opportunities in which faculty and students travel to locales around the world to broaden their horizons and enrich their classroom experience.

The undergraduate history curriculum at Valdosta State spans time and covers all areas of the world, with a special focus on American history, Georgia history and the history of the southern region of the United States. Students also receive a strong foundation in the history of other regions of the world including South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. During the course of their studies, history students learn about major political and social developments in history, develop superior oral and written communication skills, and hone their critical analysis and historical interpretation skills. Outstanding students may qualify for the honors track.
