Overview

Students in the Valdosta State University Department of Art & Design enjoy small classes and receive one-on-one attention from faculty. Art students have access to 11 studio areas around the college and have the opportunity to display their work on campus in the VSU Fine Arts Gallery. Annual events such as the Open Student Competition and Senior Exhibit give students additional opportunities to display their work to the Valdosta State community. Students may broaden their horizons by participating in the department’s study abroad program in Florence, Italy, where they take courses in art history and drawing and see great works of art in person. All art students are invited to participate in Kappa Pi, an organization dedicated to promoting artistic excellence at the college level and beyond.

In the Bachelor of Arts program, students receive a liberal arts degree with a major in art and develop skills, knowledge and competency in the discipline. Students develop a broad base of knowledge in the visual arts and other areas, focus on historic and contemporary forms of art, and develop problem-solving skills in the area of art analysis. The coursework is flexible and many students choose a minor outside of art to complement their liberal arts studies. The program prepares students for entrepreneurial careers in the visual arts and for advanced degrees.
