Overview

Printmaking's rich history began with hand printed woodcuts and wood engravings, followed by moveable type and intaglio processes (metal engraving, etching, drypoint, aquatint and mezzotint). Lithography, a form of planographic printing from limestone was invented in the 1790's and is still in use today. Screenprint, which relies upon a stencil, developed more recently. Contemporary forms of printmaking increasingly utilize large format pigment-based printers, along with a wide gamut of digital tools and technologies including the adaptation of industrial tools such as laser cutters and CNC machines. The faculty, staff and facilities in the Fine Arts - Print Media program of the University at Buffalo provide the best of the past and present.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will have knowledge of:

Developed an individual toolbox of technical skills combined with the ability to be fearless and inventive in individual exploration.

The ability to work resourcefully, safely and independently on print projects of increasing complexity and depth.

Developed the skills and confidence to initiate and complete self-driven research.

Developed skills for critical analysis and its articulation. This includes discursive skills for presenting work, explaining concepts and critically engaging the work of others.

Acquired an understanding of the historical roles of printmaking and the contemporary practice of print media in art and visual culture.

Careers

UB Art alumni can qualify for a range of professions that involve creative problem solving, critical thinking and an understanding of cultural context, including art galleries, museums, alternative spaces and auction houses.Our alumni include many artists who have national and international reputations from their acclaimed exhibitions, commissions, and awards. Alumni have also had great success in education, becoming professors or lecturers at leading colleges and universities or teachers at community colleges and secondary schools. In addition, alumni have entered a range of professions in places such as art galleries, museums, alternative art spaces, auction houses, design and advertising firms, and government agencies for culture as directors, designers, curators, preparators, installers and art handlers, as well as finding themselves in conservation, fabrication, fund raising, and community outreach programming.
